User Testing

After i made the changes highlighted in the crit i i then put it through some user testing to check the basic function of the site. Posing various questions about my sites navigation and content to ascertain its usability and overall feel.

User Testing
Begin on the homepage

Questions

How legible do you think the text is, is it easy to read on all sizes of the site?

Gina- the text on this website is readable and spacious, the transparent background helps make the text stand out.

Jake- The text on the site overall utilises space, and is easily legible. The only change i would personally make is that on the “Dragonfly” section, some of the text cam get lost when on top of the green background. Consider revising Jessica.

Can you find the sentence beginning “The Green Darner however can shiver its wings,”- is it easy to find? how navigational is the site?

Gina-i found the sentence from the home page by clicking on the green darner button. The navigation is easy to use as the buttons are labeled out as well as being pictures.

Jake - I found it using the iMac’s “find” function. Although, this did not hinder my ability to navigate to the correct page before hand. The navigation is slick and well thought out with a new play to a very static navigational structure.

Can you find the Monarch Butterfly Fun Facts at mobile size?

Gina- finding the fun facts was simple as i was on the green darner page i scrolled to the top to find the Monarch butterfly button, adjusted the page to mobile size and found the fun facts at the bottom of the page.

Jake Is The King -  Found them! It was very easy to navigate the mobile site as it is a continuous stream of data. The heading is very legible and easy to find.

How many species of hummingbird are there? how easy is it to find the answer to this question?

Ginaover 300 hummingbird species. very easy to find simply clicked north on the header which took me to the top hummingbird button.

Jake  - There is over 300, It’s very easy to find, right at the top. A very striking fact.

Beginning on the Green Darner dragonfly page how easy is it to find and navigate back to the home page? is the home page obvious enough?

Gina-it is very simple to get back to the homepage, by clicking the title heading which tilts this makes it more obvious that its navigation.

Jake - As obvious as it ends up being, i did not notice that there was a home button at all. After being told to look for it i found it, but before that i had no idea there was one there. Sorry Jess.

Are there any problems with the site that you found? Please explain below.

Gina-There are no major problems with the website it is all simple to navigate around and is very well designed. I think the fact most the navigation moves on a click helps differentiate interactive elements. I would just say to look at the text as spaces are needed between words.

Jake - Overall i have no gripes with the site, the only problem i have encountered is how noticeable the home button is. The fact that i didn’t see it saying “home” anywhere, may be an issue.

Overall opinion of the site
Gina- Its well designed and fun there are also various interactive elements that make it more interesting, its visually very striking and although it has a very basic layout it is effective and relies more on the style which is fine because it looks good.

Jake- The site is fine, slight home navigation issue with the home button but it works, also an unconventional nav with interesting moving button images.

One of my users seemed to have a problem with the light green background colour on my dragonfly page but this issue was not raised with my other tester- Since a darker background would certainly drown out the text i plan on keeping this the same since i think its more of personal preference, as well as this it was pointed out that my home page navigation wasnt as obvious but again this was contradicted by another user, i do think that the home is a little obscure but ive tried to make it more obvious by applying the same tilt that are on my  nav elements and throughout my research many of the logos and headings on certain sites use this same form of navigation so I'm also going to rely on general knowledge of the web and assume that my users will recognise the heading as a navigational element. Design wise i felt that three buttons in a row looked better than four which is why i opted to put the home nav on my heading.
